A large, confident, regal, and statuesque dog, that should
immediately convey such an impression, in addition to displaying strength, power, and expressing balance & symmetry, with
thick bone construction and pronounced muscularity throughout its frame.
Color Various colors occur in the Boerboel, from shades
of reds, browns, fawns, white, black, and in combinations (such as in piebalds and brindles). Color is not a concern so long
as the dog maintains the conformation as described hereinafter.
Size Male dogs should appear masculine (as compared to bitches) and should be no less than 25 in. tall
at the highest point of the shoulder. All things being equal, a larger dog is preferred. Bitches should appear feminine (as compared to males) and should be no less than 23 in. tall at the highest point of
the shoulder. All things being equal, a larger dog is preferred.
Head The Head is large, broad, and well muscled on the top and sides. Wrinkles may also be present on
the top and sides, especially when alert. The top of the Skull is flat. The Skull should gradually blend into the muzzle A stop
is present, but slight and not pronounced. The Muzzle is well filled on the sides
and should gradually ease into the skull sides. The Nasal Bone is straight, broad,
filled in and must not appear “hound like” nor should it appear “bully like”. A guide length of 3
in. to 4 in. is ideal, however it should represent symmetry with the skull width. The
Muzzle and Nasal bone are broad and square-like when viewed from the front. The
Nose is typically black, however, slight touches of pink or salmon are allowed on dogs that have white markings on the head.
The nostrils should be large and spaced widely. The Lips are loose and thick, but
should not droop much below the bottom jaw (parallel with the lower jaw is preferred). The Lips are typically black, however, slight touches of pink are permitted on dogs that have white markings on the head. The Teeth should be straight, correctly spaced, and should position into a scissor bite. The Eyes should be horizontal, spaced correctly, and set in the skull correctly (not sunken or
bulged), and should not present any sign of abnormality. Eye colors in shades of
brown are preferred. Other colors are considered a fault (not a disqualification). The
Ears must be natural, symmetrical with the head, and form the shape of V. When alert,
correctly hanging Ears will have the fold in line with the top of the skull.
Neck The Neck should be thick, strong, well muscled, and should be symmetrical
with the head and body. An observable arch should be present on the back of the Neck leading to the occiput. A loose Dewlap should be present.
Forequarter The Shoulders should
be broad and well muscled. The Chest should compliment the
shoulders, and be equally broad and well muscled. When viewed from the side, the Chest should arch upwards in front of the
upper arms, and should be at least as deep as the elbow. The
Front Legs should be completely vertical when viewed from the front or side. The Elbow should be parallel with the body. The Upper
arms should be well muscled. The Forelegs should appear thick
and be well muscled. The Front Pasterns should be short,
thick, and in line with the forearms. They should not turn in or outwards. The Forepaws should be large, thick, with short, thick toes closely grouped (not spadefeet), and faced straight forward.
They should also be well padded.
Body The length of the Body should be symmetrical with the size of the dog. It should not be too long,
nor too short. The Topline should be straight. The Back is broad, straight and well muscled. The loin should appear short and well defined and almost in line with bottom of chest. The Ribcage should be broad and symmetrical with the body. The Croup is straight, broad and well muscled. The Tail is set high, and should point straight up at the base when alert. May be cropped or natural.
Hindquarters Should be strong, well muscled, and symmetrical with size of the dog. The Thighs should be thick and very well muscled when viewed from the side or behind. The Legs should be correctly angled when viewed from the side, with short, thick, and strong Pasterns
that are vertical, and in line with legs and body when viewed from behind. Dewclaws should be removed. The Hindpaws should be
large, thick, with short, thick Toes closely grouped (not spadefeet), and faced straight forward. They should be well padded.
Skin/Coat The
Skin is thick and loose on the body. It should be well pigmented on dogs without white markings. The Coat is short, smooth, and soft.
Pigmentation Dogs should have dark Pigmentation on skin, lips footpads, toenails, anus,

legs should move in line with the body when viewed from front and from behind. The Topline should remain level during movement.
